St. Lucia and Grenada are volcanic islands of steep green mountains, rainforest and sheltered harbors. They are standard stops on Southern Caribbean itineraries, and two of the most scenic days a Caribbean cruise can offer.
In St. Lucia, ships dock at Castries, the capital, on the northwest coast. In Grenada, they berth at St. George’s, whose horseshoe-shaped harbor, the Carenage, is often called one of the prettiest in the Caribbean.
St. Lucia

The twin peaks of Gros Piton and Petit Piton, protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are St. Lucia’s icon. A classic cruise day drives or sails south along the coast to Soufrière to see them, often adding the Sulphur Springs, billed as a drive-in volcano, mineral mud baths, and the Diamond Falls botanical gardens. Closer to Castries, Marigot Bay, Rodney Bay and Pigeon Island National Landmark make easier half-days.

Grenada
Grand Anse Beach, a long curve of sand south of St. George’s, is a quick ride from the pier and one of the most popular beach days in the region. Other favorites include spice estate and chocolate tours, the Annandale and Seven Sisters waterfalls in the rainforest, Fort George above the harbor, and snorkel trips to the Underwater Sculpture Park in Moliniere Bay.

St. Lucia and Grenada Questions
Can I see the Pitons from the cruise port?
Not from Castries. The Pitons are near Soufrière on the southwest coast, reached by a scenic drive or a boat trip down the coast; allow most of the day.
Why is Grenada called the Spice Island?
Grenada grows nutmeg, mace, cinnamon, cloves and cocoa, and nutmeg even appears on its flag. Spice estate and chocolate tours are popular from the cruise port.
Were these islands hit by recent hurricanes?
Grenada was hit hard by Hurricane Ivan in 2004, and Hurricane Beryl struck its sister island of Carriacou as a Category 4 storm in July 2024. St. Lucia was struck by Hurricane Tomas in 2010. They are less exposed than the northern islands but not storm-free.
Making the Most of Two Big Days
- The Pitons trip is long and winding; take seasickness or motion remedies if you are prone to them, and book a tour that guarantees your return.
- Both islands use the Eastern Caribbean dollar; U.S. dollars are widely accepted.
- Pack a light rain jacket for rainforest walks and swimwear for waterfalls.
- A balcony on the side facing land makes sail-in and sail-out spectacular; Cruise Ship Deck Plans explains how to choose.
