Dominica and St. Kitts often appear on Southern Caribbean itineraries that start in San Juan or Barbados. Dominica is the most untamed island in the region, a mountainous, rain-soaked “Nature Island”. St. Kitts is smaller and more developed, with a mountain spine, sugar-era history and one of the great fortresses of the Caribbean.
Ships dock at Roseau, Dominica’s capital, and sometimes at Portsmouth in the north. On St. Kitts, they dock at Port Zante in Basseterre, which has a cruise shopping area right on the waterfront.
Dominica
Trafalgar Falls
Twin waterfalls in the rainforest above Roseau, with hot and cold pools nearby.
Champagne Reef
Snorkel over volcanic vents where streams of warm bubbles rise from the seabed.
Morne Trois Pitons
The national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site in the island’s volcanic heart, with lakes, fumaroles and rainforest trails.
Whale watching
Dominica is known for sperm whale sightings off its west coast; boat trips run from Roseau.
Dominica was devastated by Hurricane Maria in 2017 and has rebuilt since. Its terrain makes tours slow-going, so choose one or two highlights. See Dominica shore excursions.
St. Kitts
Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a massive 18th-century British fortress on a hill above the west coast, with wide views to neighboring islands. The St. Kitts Scenic Railway, built to haul sugar cane, now carries visitors on a narrated ride along the coast. Frigate Bay and the beaches of the southeast peninsula are a short ride from the pier, and ferries cross to Nevis for a quieter day.

Dominica and St. Kitts Questions
Is Dominica the same as the Dominican Republic?
No. Dominica (dom-ih-NEE-ka) is a small independent island between Guadeloupe and Martinique. The Dominican Republic shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, far to the northwest.
How long is the St. Kitts Scenic Railway?
The narrow-gauge line, built to carry sugar cane, runs a long loop around much of the island; the tour combines a train ride with a bus for the rest of the circle, and takes most of a morning.
Can I visit Nevis from St. Kitts?
Yes. Ferries and water taxis cross to Nevis, St. Kitts’s sister island. On a cruise day, allow extra time and choose a return that leaves a comfortable margin before all-aboard.
Where These Islands Fit
St. Kitts lies close to Antigua and is sometimes paired with it on Eastern Caribbean sailings; our sister site Eastern Caribbean Cruises covers Antigua. Dominica lies between Guadeloupe and Martinique and appears mostly on longer routes and San Juan or Barbados departures. If either is a must, tell our advisors and they will filter for it.
